The Future
I have to go and plan the future now….well I have to make a plan to plan the future to be more precise because the future I have to plan for today is that of a collective enterprise. We will discuss the options paper I have already prepared and distributed, dig out the old SWOT, play some guessing games, argue this way and that about what’s best and then I will have to deliver on the consequences….but all of that is on Saturday (and beyond)….for today I have to plan how to conduct a collective process to plan the future…..something seems to tell me I’m already there!
The Big Society
The ‘Big Society’ is far too important an idea to be led by party politics……in fact we could drop big and use instead Sane, Fair, Equal, Just, or any one of a hundred other words if they mean a more collective approach to living, caring and sharing a way of life together.
Stan Tracey is an outstanding figure in the jazz world. His distinguished career has spanned six decades of flourishing creativity. He has been a highly influential and stimulating musical voice, not only to his peers, but to each successive generation of musicians with whom he has worked.
Stan’s capricious piano playing combines the percussive melody of Thelonious Monk with the robust lyricism of Ellington in a highly idiosyncratic style. A master of harmony, he possesses a potent and compelling improviser’s intellect.

Michael Wood in Coalville
Broadcaster and academic Michael Wood gave an amazing talk at the Century Theatre in Coalville this Saturday - he is making a series of programmes (passing his hundredth documentary in the process) based around the Leicestershire village of Kibworth to tell the story of England. Such a knowledgeable and entertaining speaker - fascinating - I could have listened to him all day and a great insight into the film makers approach to a large scale community participation project.
UK2K12
The Japanese Matsuri event in London was a great place to launch our 3 year programme of new arts/social arts projects a couple of weeks ago and I have been busy spotting the butterflies of my thoughts since to make sense of where we go with it next.
I am still left speechless, lost in emotions I can’t fathom when confronted by this vast space and what happened here - the argument over the building of a mosque and Islamic centre nearby has brought me back - there are some very sane and sensible things being said about building relationships for the future and some very angry things being said out of hurt and blame. I hope the good sense prevails and America does what it says on the can.
